He Popped The Question, You Said “Yes”. You’re Engaged, Now What Happens?

Newly engaged, now what happens?

Congratulations! You and your fiancé have decided you want to spend the rest of your lives together – now you’ve got even more important decisions to make!

You’re about to start planning an incredible event that you’ll remember for the rest of your life. To make sure you and your groom-to-be have the wedding of your dreams, it’s a good idea to start thinking about some of the basics as soon as you reasonably can.

Marriage Proposal

Here are top tips for making the most of your engagement, before moving on to wedding plans…

RELAX AND ENJOY~

Take a deep breath. Before you start thinking about what comes next, stop. Take a mental photo (and a real photo) of the place where the proposal happened, remember how you felt at that moment and enjoy the excitement that comes along with being newly engaged. Maybe even write down how you feel on a piece of paper to share with your spouse on your wedding day.

TELL YOUR PARENTS~

Give them the honor of hearing the news first. Have the champagne ready to celebrate

TELL YOUR FAMILY & FRIENDS~

Before announcing it on social media, be certain everyone who should hear it from you personally has been called

PREPARE YOURSELF FOR QUESTIONS~

Tell people you’re engaged, and questions pour out of them.  While it’s sweet that everybody is so curious about whether you’ve set a date, where the wedding will be, if you’re changing your name, and how many kids you want, facing all of those queries can be a little daunting. It helps to have a set of answers ready to go, even if they’re vague. (eg. “We’re thinking early Summer, beach wedding, 2018”).

CELEBRATE!! ~
Hooray! This is mega exciting and you need to celebrate in the way that is best for you. This might be a super formal engagement party with a proper theme or it might be a casual get together with friends who come ’round with beer and pizza.

LIVE IN THE MOMENT – THE “IN BETWEEN” STAGE~

Once you’ve enjoyed sharing the news and taken as much time as you want to live in the moment that exists between planning a wedding and getting engaged, you can move on to the next step

PURCHASE INSURANCE FOR YOUR RING~

Although you don’t want to ever take your engagement ring off, realistically you will, so you should insure it against loss, theft, and damage. Ring insurance can be purchased as an extension for your renters’ or homeowners’ policy.

So now that you have all the announcements out of the way….[I know you are squirming around because you want to start planning your wedding], but wait… STOP, SIT & THINK!

Get together with your new fiancé and have an open discussion on what you both think the next steps should be and the right timing for it. Enjoy your engagement, include your fiancé so he doesn’t feel left out.

NOW YOU’RE READY TO START PLANNING THE WEDDING OF YOUR DREAMS. . .

      Thanks Allison!

Being engaged should be treasured before going “full speed ahead” to wedding planning.
